Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor: Preliminary Task

1) Pre production (story boarding, prop lists) )
In the pre-production stages of creating this version of the Arctic Monkeys video 'I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor' we had to create a storyboard. This was crucial to beginning the music video because we all needed to see as a group how the video was going to turn out and by making sure that we all created a story board that went shot by shot for the first 30 seconds of the original video. After doing that and making sure that it was detailed enough and descriptive enough to tell you exactly what the shots looked like and what angles they would be. In the end we only used one person's storyboard as that was easier to do because then we could concentrate on what they had done, also everybody had already done the same 30 seconds of the video so this what not a probably in the end. What we had to do after that as a group was to come up with a prop list and where to access all of the materials that we need to acquire within the school premises to make it easier to make and to be authentic. It is important when making a music video, which I have now learnt and realised for my own coursework, that you need to make a list and storyboard before completing the video because then that means that you can be organised and know exactly what needs to happen and when and also what you will need to acquire to make the video look authentic and believable. I have learnt a lot throughout this process and I feel as though I have been able to see exactly what the process is and even though it was only a simplified version of what I will eventually be making it was still beneficial and an effective way of learning the process because making and editing a video is probably a lot harder than it seems and that realisation was an important one to learn. As we were all working together it was an easier task because we were all assigned jobs as to what part of the video we would be working on. This was a particularly important aspect of making this video and also as a future reference when working with my group making the final music video because it really makes sure that everybody is contributing and putting in their share of the effort. Also by doing this it allows for everybody to put their best effort into their section alone which in the end makes for a better music video all round, this is something that I would like to replicate in my final music video because it makes sure that everybody has their set tasks and it also makes sure that you keep organised throughout the process. Overall I thought the pre production section was probably the most important part of the whole video because it made sure that everything was organised and set up for the next task which would be filming.

2)Production (filming etc)
The filming aspect of the music video was next. As I stated in the pre production section, everybody was assigned their own individual section and we all had to work together to produce the final video. There were four people out of the class that were assigned to be a part of the band and the rest of us were behind the scenes and making sure that the lighting, sound, camera and direction of the video was correct and that it matched up perfectly to the original Arctic Monkeys video. This was quite a tricky section to do because we had to film on two separate days because some members of the class were not in school for the first filming day. Consequently that meant that the location changed and the whole video had to be filmed again because the footage from the previous day wouldn't have matched up to the rest of the shots that had to be filmed on the second day. This could have been a big problem however, we came together as a class and made sure that the whole of the footage was filmed and perfect for the final video. We filmed shot by shot, completely matched up to the original storyboard. This attention to detail and making sure that all of the shots were perfect was a really good idea because the final video looks a lot like the original Arctic Monkeys video, give or take a few aspects of the mise en scene. Working together in such a big group was a really big learning curve for myself because I have never worked on a piece of creative work with other people before as I am quite independent with my creative school activities/tasks. This was an important lesson to learn because I am going to have to work in a group for the actual coursework and I have to be able to compromise on ideas sometimes because everybody has their own way of looking and thinking about things. Being able to witness this before actually going into the main task was extremely beneficial because I have been able to adapt myself for the later task.

3)Post production (editing footage etc)
Once all of the footage had been filmed, we then proceeded to start editing the video. Instead of each of us individually editing the final video, we all contributed to the same one. This again was a good example of team work and because of that it was a very fulfilling experience. However, after that I realised that for the final task that we will not be allowed to all contribute to the same editing. I like this because then it can be your take on the music video and even though that will be making the task slightly harder, it means that you will get more out of it in the end because you will be proud at the work you've done. We uploaded all of the clips onto the Apple Macs and used the software, Final Cut Pro. This is the software that I will be using for my final piece and it gives a very professional finish to the video which is what we want because then it will seem more authentic and believable and a professional piece. The next thing we had to do was to take the sound out of the video that we had filmed (people talking, background noises etc.) and replace it with the Arctic Monkeys song. This is quite a difficult part of the process because you have to make sure that everything is perfect and that the music, lyrics and visuals all match up to create something that is believable. As I have said in the previous section, there is one shot that is in a different location that doesn't match up because we didn't manage to get around to filming that shot. This is something that would have to be rectified in the final coursework video because that kind of slip up can't happen because it has to look professional. That means that as a group we will have to make sure that we either film all of our video altogether when we have got the location or making sure that we are able to get the same location again if we have to film on a different day. Overall, I think that the final product of this Arctic Monkeys video worked out really well and a part from a few mistakes I think that it looked really good for the time and resources we had.
